The Global Aquaculture Alliance on Thursday presented the second of two Lifetime Achievement awards to Dr. I Chiu Liao.

An award-winning scientist, Liao catalyzed shrimp farming throughout Asia. He is also a researcher and researcher and a leader in sustainable aquaculture.

Liao was born in Tokyo and earned a Ph.D. at the University of Tokyo and went on to become a research fellow at the Rockefeller Foundation. He has served as director of Tungkang Marine Laboratory, director general of the Taiwan Fisheries Research Institute and chairman of the Fisheries Society of Taiwan.

“Throughout Asia, Dr. Liao is known as the father of Penaeus monodon farming, but actually I think he’s more than that,” said George Chamberlain, GAA president. “I think he’s the father if shrimp farming in Asia, because he started the whole business, and it radiated well beyond Taiwan.”

The first Lifetime Achievement award was given to Dr. Chingchai Lohawatanakul, president of CP Foods. Both awards were presented during the GOAL 2012 conference that runs from 30 October to 2 November at the Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok.

In addition, GAA announced the establishment of a special award open to all producers with active Best Aquaculture Practices certification.

The Global Aquaculture Innovation Award serves to recognize and reward innovative practices that overcome production challenges or mitigate negative environmental or social impacts at aquaculture farms certified under the BAP program.

Sponsored by Novus International, the program’s objectives include recognizing significant and novel achievements in the aquaculture industry brought by individual companies or research groups and to distinguish unorthodox perspectives over technology applications in the industry that lead to a truly sustainable aquaculture industry.

The award winner will receive a plaque, an all-expenses paid trip to the GOAL 2013 conference and a USD 1,000 cash prize.

Nominations can be submitted by emailing GAA’s David Lee at dangaelle@aol.com.
