US-based Guernsey Dairy has halted the production of organic milk, due to due to decline in milk yields as a result of sustained wind and rain and poor crop harvests.
The company will import Jersey milk to make up for the shortage, reported the BBC.
Guernsey Dairy general manager Andrew Tabel said that they will evaluate if the organic milk can be reintroduced in a week.
It is the first time in five years that the milk is being imported, Tabel added.
The milk imported is less than 0.4% of more than 135,000 litres a week that is supplied by local herds. The low supply is likely end by this autumn, as a numbers of farmers reported that their cows are due to calve.
The Guernsey Dairy has an annual turnover in excess of £6m and currently employs 37 part-time and full-time staff. The Dairy purchases on average 8 million litres of raw milk from 18 local dairy farms annually.
