Lifeway Foods, a US-based supplier of kefir cultured dairy products, is set to purchase the dairy plant of US-based Golden Guernsey in Waukesha, Wisconsin for $7.4m.

With this transaction, the company aims to expand its kefir-based business manufacturing capacity.

Using this new dairy plant and the company's existing manufacturing plant in Morton Grove, Illinois, Lifeway Foods expects to quadruple its production capacity.

Closed in January 2013 following a bankruptcy filing by Golden Guernsey, the acquired dairy plant will be opened this summer. The company will also recruit new staff to operate the facility.

The transaction is expected to close on 10 June 2013.

Lifeway's product portfolio ranges from ProBugs organic kefir drinks for children to packaged frozen kefir. It also offers Lifeway Kefir, a dairy beverage that contains 10 live and active probiotic cultures plus ProBoost.
