US-based Michael Foods has received Safe Quality Food (SQF) Level 3 Certification at all of its production facilities.

SQF, which is recognized by retailers and foodservice providers worldwide, sets standards for a food producer's safety and quality management systems. The highest level of SQF certification is Level 3, which requires a rigorous third-party audit process in addition to an extensive review of policies, procedures and systems.

Michael Foods quality assurance vice president Steve Bacon said that while the company already had established stringent safety and quality programs, SQF certification helps cultivate a stronger culture of accountability at all levels.

The SQF Program was launched in 1994 and is granted by the SQF Institute, a division of the Food Marketing Institute (FMI). SQF is one of only three certification systems recognized by the Global Food Safe Initiative (GFSI), which links primary production certification to food manufacturing, distribution and agent/broker management certification.

Michael Foods, based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, is a producer and distributor of food products to the foodservice, retail and food ingredient markets. Its principal products are value-added egg products, refrigerated potato products, cheese and other dairy products.
