Core Tip: Wine exports from the US increased by 2.6% to $1.43bn in 2012 compared to the revenues of $1.39bn generated in 2011
Wine exports from the US increased by 2.6% to $1.43bn in 2012 compared to the revenues of $1.39bn generated in 2011, according to California-based advocacy and public policy association Wine Institute.

The increase in revenues was led by California, which accounted for 90% of wine exports.

The total volume of wines shipped in 2012 reached 426.6 million liters, down by 4.94% from 446 million liters in 2011.

Among the major markets for California wines, European Union member countries, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Vietnam, Mexico and South Korea accounted for generating most business.

Wine Institute president and CEO Robert Koch said exports of California wines continue to rise because of quality, diversity and value, despite tough economic conditions and trade barriers.

"We've worked to create more opportunities to export our wines by supporting our government in opening markets with Free Trade Agreements and other negotiations," Koch added.

Wine Institute international trade policy director Tom LaFaille said they are partnering with US government, World Wine Trade Group, the EU and Pacific Rim governments to reduce the trade barriers.

"In particular, the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation 'Wine Regulators Forum' are working to implement good regulatory practices that will protect consumers and facilitate trade in our Asia-Pacific markets," LaFaille added.
