Brazilian export issues threaten market ties

Core Tip: Brazil is harvesting a record soybean crop, however exports are being delayed by severe port congestion.
Reportedly, the Sunrise Group, China's leading soybean trader, has cancelled nearly two million tonnes of soybeans, as a direct result of port congestion, with some ships waiting 40 to 50 days to load at Brazilian ports.

"Brazil is becoming a doubtful business partner. If you can't meet deadlines, it will cost you," said managing director of the Association of Soy and Corn Growers State (Aprosoja/MT), Roger Augusto Rodrigues.

The US Department of Agriculture estimates that Brazilian farmers are harvesting a crop at 83.5 million tons, with exports forecast at 38.4 million.

Poor infrastructure is partly being blamed for the lack in progress, with President Dilma Rousseff aiming to secure $235 billion in funding to improve harbours, railways and toll roads.

There is speculation that China may turn to Argentina, as Brazil fails to deliver.
