Netherlands-based seafood supplier Anova Seafood has become the first company to bring tuna from Fiji to Europe bearing the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) logo.
First introduced on 23 April, the company is now selling its Fiji Albacore tuna range in fresh and frozen form.
“For Anova, this is a wonderful opportunity to announce the good news,” said Anova’s unit manager of marketing and retail, Hendrik Colpaert. “After all, in the seafood industry, sustainably caught tuna has been long awaited There is increasing demand of consumers and professionals for sustainably caught and fully traceable MSC certified tuna.”
Members of the Fiji Tuna Boat Owners Association have worked to earn MSC certification, and the association got the MSC’s approval starting in December 2012.
“We’re the first Pacific tuna fishery to sell our products direct to Europe with the complete chain of custody in place,” said Rhadika Kumar, general manager of Solander, one of the company members of the association. “Before MSC certification, our Albacore would go straight to canneries but now we are able to market it as a sustainable, fully traceable premium tuna.”
