Norwegian seafood exports set records in April, up 22 percent compared to figures from April of 2012.
Seafood exports valued NOK 4.4 billion (USD 755.2 million, EUR 575.7 million), according to the Norwegian Seafood Council, up NOK 795 million (USD 136.4 million, EUR 104 million) over the same time last year. Year-to-date numbers are up to, 5 percent higher than at this time last year.
“April saw record high prices for Norwegian salmon as a result of increasing international demand exceeding supply,” said Egil Ove Sundheim, director of market information with the council.
Salmon export values were up, totaling NOK 3 billion (USD 514.9 million, EUR 392.5 million), 38 percent higher than April 2012. Norwegian Fjord Trout exports were up, too, by NOK 53 million (USD 9 million, EUR 6.9 million) to a total of NOK 194 million (USD 33.3 million, EUR 25.4 million).
Exports of clipfish went up in value in April as well, to a total of NOK 179 million (USD 30.7 million, EUR 23.4 million). Exports of fresh Norwegian cod including fillets from fishery in April increased in value by NOK 73 million (USD 12.5 million, EUR 9.5 million) to a total of NOK 195 million (USD 33.5 million, EUR 25.4 million). Frozen cod exports went up too, to NOK 110 million (USD 18.9 million, EUR 14.4 million).
Salted fish exports, including fillets in April was on a par with April 2012 at NOK 118 million (USD 20.2 million, EUR 15.4 million), but herring and mackerel exports were down in value by a total of NOK 50 million (USD 8.6 million, EUR 6.5 million) compared to April of 2012.
