Record exports of Norwegian seafood in April

"It is primarily the increased value of salmon exports that contribute to growth in April. Norwegian salmon is sold in more than 100 markets worldwide, and in April we note a record high salmon prices as a result of the growth in international demand exceeds development," said Egil Ove Sundheim, director of market intelligence at Norwegian Seafood Council.

Record salmon

Salmon exports increased by 38 per cent compared with April last year and reached a record for the month of April.

This year's salmon exports stood at 11.1 billion, an increase of 2.3 billion or 25 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Higher export prices are causing the increase. The average price for whole fresh Norwegian salmon in April 42,01 NOK 29.58 million in April 2012. France and Poland the biggest buyers of salmon from Norway.

Trout exports increased by 53 million in April, for a total value of 194 million. This year, exports of trout reached 675 million, an increase of NOK 131 million compared to 2012. The largest buyers of trout from Norway, Russia and Belarus.

Down for herring and mackerel

Exports of herring fell by 50 million in April, to a total value of 149 million. This year, exports of herring are 958 million, a decrease of NOK 793 million compared to last year. Russia and Germany are the largest markets for herring.

Mackerel fell in April by 39 million to a total of 57 million. For mackerel, the Ukraine and China are the main markets.
