US-based fast-food restaurant chain McDonald's is gearing upto double its Malaysian outlets to 500 over the next seven years.

The global foodservice retailer currently has about 245 restaurants across the nation.

Under the expansion, McDonald's plans to open 300 stores by 2014, 400 by 2016 and the remaining 100 outlets by the end of 2020.

McDonald's Malaysia managing director Sarah Casanova told The Star that the chain still have many new markets to tap within the country.

"There are so many cities, big and small towns where there is no McDonald's presence and we continue to grow the business because Malaysians love McDonald's," said Casanova.

"Today, there is enough room to have twice as many restaurants. By the time in 2020 when we have 500 restaurants, we'd probably want 650 restaurants."

In addition, McDonald's is keen to launch about 80 McCafes by the end of 2013.
