Rutter's recently celebrated its 11th consecutive year as the winner of the Best Milk category in the York Daily Record/Sunday News annual Best of York reader’s poll.
Now under the third generation of family leadership, Rutter's Dairy collects its milk exclusively from local dairy farms and produces milk products on-site at the original dairy farm in York, Pa., which dates back to 1747.
In 1921, brothers George and Bud Rutter began a dairy and sold the first 15 quarts of Rutter's milk door to door from their horse-drawn wagon. Eventually, the company began milk bottling operations and opened Rutter Bros. Dairy Inc. ice cream parlor, which later evolved into the 57-store convenience chain in central Pennsylvania now known as Rutter's Farm Stores.
Rutter's reputation for wholesome products has led to its dairy expansion across the mid-Atlantic region, delivering daily to customers in Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey, the company noted.
National Dairy Month started as National Milk Month in 1937 as a way to promote drinking milk. It was initially created to stabilize the dairy demand when production was at a surplus, but after the National Dairy Council stepped in, it developed into an annual celebration.
