A Canadian lobster trap fishery based in the Gulf of St. Lawrence has earned the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for sustainable fishing, according to the MSC.
The Îles-de-la-Madeleine fishery surrounds the Magdalen Islands, and employs 325 registered vessels, selling primarily to Quebec. Lobster caught by the fishery may now display the blue MSC ecolabel, according to the MSC.
“It is exciting to see the first inshore lobster fishery in Canada gain MSC certification,” said Kerry Coughlin, regional director, for MSC Americas. “More than one-half of fishery landings in Canada are now certified to the MSC standard, helping to cement Canada’s role as a leader in the global sustainable seafood movement.”
