Core Tip: Britain’s strawberry industry will have more than national pride as a reason for cheering on Andy Murray at Wimbledon.
Britain’s strawberry industry will have more than national pride as a reason for cheering on Andy Murray at Wimbledon.

Andy’s men’s singles appearances at Wimbledon help boost strawberry sales with demand when he plays rising by an average of 20 per cent compared to days when he doesn’t play.

In order to honour his (unintentional!) promotional skills Tesco has commissioned a unique mosaic of him made from, of course, strawberries which will be on display at the Curzon Gallery in Wimbledon.

Tesco strawberry buyer Paul Jones explained: “Sales of British strawberries peak during Wimbledon fortnight but if we’ve got a home player to cheer on and a good match to follow then demand is even stronger. Last year every time Andy appeared on court sales of strawberries rose.

“As a thank you for helping the British strawberry industry we’ve commissioned a unique mosaic of him made out of strawberries which will be on display at a Wimbledon art gallery just a lob away from the courts. We hope that he comes down to have a look at it.”

During Wimbledon fortnight British shoppers buy approximately 9500 tonnes or 19 million punnets of strawberries – that’s about 15 per cent of the entire season’s British strawberries.

The 9ft by 16foot mosaic has been created by food art specialist Maria Iredale from Letchworth Arts Centre.
