Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy persons may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The recalled product is packaged in 17.64oz/500 grams plastic containers and has an expiration date of 10/31/13 stamped on the back of the container. The UPC Number is 021 143241228. The product was sold nationwide. It is a product of the USA.
The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. Consumers who purchased Rybacka Wies Brand Herring Fillets in Oil/"Matjes Sledz w oleju" should not consume it and should return it to the place of purchase.
