LANXESS, a Germany-based specialty chemicals company, has received approval for its Velcorin microbial control agent to use in water-based non-alcoholic beverages and wine in Canada.
Velcorin is currently used as a microbial control agent to control spoilage organisms in beverages across the world, including in the US, European Union, China and India.
When added to beverages during production, the microbial control agent offers protection against harmful micro-organisms in non-alcoholic beverages and wine without affecting the taste, odor or color of the drink.
Produced by LANXESS Material Protection Products (MPP) business unit at its German sites in Dormagen and Krefeld-Uerdingen, Velcorin (dimethyl dicarbonate) reduces PET and energy consumption through cold filling.
Positive effects of Velcorin in the stabilization of beverages were documented by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the World Health Organization's Joint Expert Committee for Food Additives (JECFA), claims the company.
LANXESS North America business line beverage technology head Michael Turpin said: "We already have successfully run trials at Canadian customers and can now move towards commercialization of the first beverages with our advanced microbial control technology."
