Subway, an American restaurant chain, is gearing up to open nearly 800 to 1,000 outlets in 2014 as part of plans to expand aggressively across the Europe.

The expansion plan includes twice the number of restaurants the Connecticut-based company opened over the past two years.

Subway assistant regional director Mike Charest told Bloomberg that the chain operates 4,108 stores in Europe, where it has continued to grow during the continent's recession and wobbly recovery.

"Europe is the strongest, fastest-growing international market for Subway outside of North America, and will continue to be," Charest added.

In the UK, the chain is keen to have a total of 2,000 restaurants by 2015, from the current 1,544. In 2013 alone, the sandwich maker added 63 outlets.

Subway will open about 190 to 200 stores in Russia and 100 in France next year.

The restaurant operator will also expand its brand to Latvia, Lithuania, Georgia and Ukraine by the end of 2013, alongside focusing on the Netherlands, Finland and Sweden markets.
