Burcon NutraScience has opened a semi-works facility in Winnipeg, Canada for the production of its Peazazz pea protein.
According to the company, the facility features commercial-scale equipment and will cater to the food and beverage manufacturers seeking to conduct real-time market evaluations of Peazazz in their consumer products.
It also supports Burcon and its potential partners for the production and marketing of Peazazz.
Peazazz, which is derived from field peas, is ideal for use in a variety of food, beverage and nutritional products including sports nutrition beverages, citrus-based drinks, fruit-flavored beverages, fruit juice blends as well as in snacks, cereals, diet, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan food products.
Burcon president and COO Johann F. Tergesen said that the commissioning of Peazazz semi-works plant marks a significant advancement in the commercialization of pea protein.
"We had already established the unique functional and nutritional attributes of Peazazz with our pilot-scale plant to produce small samples, and now we can demonstrate how Peazazz can be economically produced using commercial-scale equipment," Tergesen added.
Burcon NutraScience has officially launched Peazazz at the 2013 Institute of Food Technologists Annual Meeting and Food Expo event held in Chicago from 13 - 16 July.
