According to the latest data from FruitImprese, the flux of fruit and vegetable imports in Italy between January and May 2013 surpassed that of exports.
Despite the fact that exported volumes decreased (-12.7%), the economic result was rather good (+9.4%). The balance is of around 348 million Euro, 5.5% less than the same period in 2012.
Overall, in the first five months of 2013, Italy exported around 1.48 million tons of fruit and vegetables for a total value of 1.70 billion Euro.
The shipping of vegetables (-7.4%) and fresh fruit (-20%) diminished, whereas that of citrus fruit (+1.8%) and dried fruit (+15.7%) increased. In terms of value, all sectors show a positive sign - vegetables +9%, citrus fruit +34.2%, fresh fruit +6.9% and dried fruit +7.3%.

As regards imports, Italy bought abroad around 1.56 million tons of fruit and vegetables, for a total value of 1.35 billion Euro.
Among the single sectors, there was an increase in volumes of vegetables (+4.8%), citrus fruit (+11.4%), fresh fruit (+6.1%) and tropical fruit (+6.4%), whereas dried fruit countertrended (-10.%).
In terms of value, the sign is positive for all sectors.
