Bananas can no longer be brought into Queensland under new rules to stop the spread of a disease that kills crops.
Queensland Agriculture Minister John McVeigh announced the legislative change today after the banana freckle disease was found on fruit in the Northern Territory. Authorities fear it could spread through Queensland and destroy crops.
However, Mr McVeigh said there was only a low risk given there was no commercial banana trade between the state and NT.
"This change would only affect the general public or farmers travelling between the states," he said.
