On-air advertisements for energy drinks high in sugar and caffeine will be restricted from next year, the country’s food watchdog said Monday.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said the newly revised guidelines will remove energy drink commercials from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. when children mostly view television.
The younger generation has recently become increasingly dependent on energy drinks containing large amounts of stimulants such as caffeine.
Experts estimate the energy drink industry here tripled its revenue from 30 billion won in 2011 to 100 billion won in 2012.
The three highest selling energy drinks are Lotte’s Hot 6, Dongsuh Food Corp.’s Red Bull and Coca Cola Korea’s Burn Intense.
