McDonald's to open over 1,500 - 1,600 new restaurants in 2014

Global foodservice retailer McDonald's has outlined plans to open nearly 1,500 to 1,600 new restaurants in 2014, as part of its new strategic plan ‘Plan to Win,’ and to broaden its brand presence.

The company has earmarked around $2.9bn to $3bn for store openings and 1,000 reimages. McDonald's is also looking to optimize the menu and modernize customer experience.

McDonald's president and chief executive officer Don Thompson said the 'Plan to Win' continues to guide the evolution and execution of company's global growth priorities as it strives to become better and bigger.

"For more than ten years, the Plan to Win along with our System alignment, financial strength and distinct competitive advantages have served as the critical framework behind our growth," Thompson added.

The restaurant chain is aiming to obtain systemwide sales growth of 3% to 5% and operating income to rise by of 6% to 7%.

"We are intent on strengthening our brand by running even better restaurants and delivering the best food and beverage offerings."

Recently, the American food chain announced plans to double its Malaysian outlets to 500 over the next seven years.

The global foodservice retailer currently has about 245 restaurants across the US, and operates approximately 35,000 outlets serving more than 69 million customers in over 100 countries each day.
