During the winter months you need to change your dietary habits. From November, until March your body particularly needs a lot of nutrients to help strengthen the immune system. "During the cold time of year it is especially important to pay attention towards eating a healthy, balanced diet," said Melanie Bauermann, food expert from TÜV Rhineland, Germany. "To strengthen the immune system and keep colds at bay, a vitamin and zinc rich diet is recommended. Many vitamins cannot be produced in the body and only arrive through what we eat. The so called 'winter vegetables' together with citrus fruit are a good basis with which to stay healthy."
Winter vegetables are mainly types of cabbage such as kale, brussel sprouts, red cabbage and broccoli. "Different types of cabbage are valuable suppliers of vitamin C and zinc. They also supply the body with other plant substances which promote health, such as anti-bacterial's," explained Bauermann. "Freshly prepared as raw salad ingredients they provide the most winter nutrients."
