UK: Turkey butterflies produced in an unapproved establishment

Heads of Environmental Health Services will wish to be aware that twelve tonnes of turkey butterflies, processed by Severnside Provisions Ltd, Newport, South Wales, were supplied to independent butchers and catering outlets throughout South and Mid Wales, South West and South Central England. However, there may be distribution to customers not yet identified from the records available. Eight tonnes have so far been retained and prevented from entering the food chain after action by Newport City Council.

Severnside Provisions Ltd is a premises that is approved for processing bacon, but the company has been processing turkeys in conditions that do not meet the required hygiene standards for food production. The local authority is investigating the circumstances in which this meat was processed.

The ID marks identify the product as coming from various suppliers across the European Union.

Advice to consumers

There is no evidence at present of any specific risk to public health from consuming this product. However, it is illegal to supply meat from unapproved premises. If you have purchased the above product, do not eat it. The shop where it was bought should be able to advise whether the product was processed by Severnside Provisions Ltd.

Actions to be taken by enforcement authorities

As this Poultry product was manufactured in an unapproved establishment it does not comply with the requirements of Regulation EC No 853/2004, and the Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2006.

If any of this product is found during routine inspections, enforcement officers should ensure that it is withdrawn from sale and destroyed, if necessary using powers under the Food Safety Act 1990 and Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2006. All dates and batch codes of turkey butterflies processed by Severnside Provisions Ltd should be checked. In the event of a local authority finding significant quantities of this product they are requested to inform the FSA immediately and provide details of the consignment.
