High street wine retailer Majestic Wines saw total sales grow 5.9% for the 10 weeks of Christmas trading from October 29 to January 6.
Like-for-like sales grew 2.8%, meaning like-for-like sales have grown by 0.8% in the first 40 weeks of the financial year.
Chief executive Steve Lewis, said: “I am pleased to say that recently we opened our 200th store enabling more and more people to shop locally with Majestic. This Christmas, helped by our knowledgeable staff, customers chose to treat themselves and we saw strong growth in sales of fine wine above £20 per bottle. Thank you to all our customers for continuing to choose Majestic.”
Majestic, which has 200 stores in the UK and yearly sales of £274 million, according to its most recent results, has seen online transactions grow by 14.7% over the past year. Mobile and web transactions now account for 11.1% percent of total retail revenues.
The company is frequently recognised for its strong staff wine knowledge and its social media strategy has also won awards. It has a central corporate Twitter account, but store managers are encouraged to engage directly with customers via individual store accounts.
The retailer also runs a Calais outpost with two stores, where it guarantees that each bottle is at least £2 cheaper than in the UK.
In July 2013 Majestic launched a new website, with new features including the ability to browse all wines available in the customer’s local store and staff recommendations.
