Three Russian companies managing sockeye and pink salmon fisheries in Kamchatka have received certification by Friend of the Sea as meeting social and environmental requirements.
The companies, Ozernovskii Rybokonzernyi Zadov, Rybholkam and Tymlatskiy Rybokombinat Co., partners of Unimak Maritime Group, received the certification after an audit by an accredited international certification body.
The audit found that a strict quota system keeps stocks from being overfished, and fishing vessels fish far from the coast and protected areas so they won't interfere with spawning.
"Unimak Maritime is proud its Russian partners are now certified sustainable by Friend of the Sea," said William Turner, Unimak Maritime Group's president. "This important recognition confirms our environmental conservation and social accountability policies are valid and strong."
