The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) has opposed the bill by the San Francisco Land Use and Economic Development Committee to prohibit the sale or distribution of bottled water in plastic bottles of 21 fluid ounces or less in the region.
IBWA stated that banning access to bottled water would force people to purchase less healthy drink options, which have more additives, including sugar and caffeine.
Around 73% of rise in bottled water consumption has come from consumers who preferred bottled water to carbonated soft drinks, juices and milk, since 1998.
In addition, the US Food and Drug Administration has recognized bottled water as a packaged food product, which provides a safe source of drinking water.
Several bottled water firms collect water from public water sources, which will then undergo various treatment processes including monitoring, reverse osmosis, distillation, micro-filtration, carbon filtration, ozonation, and ultraviolet light.
The bottled water companies are also using recycled plastic in their bottles, while some are producing 100% recycled PET water bottles.
