UK supermSainsbury’sarket chain Sainsbury’s has promoted Jon Rudoe, director of the company’s online, digital and cross-channel operations, to its operating board.

A former executive of pure-play online supermarket
Ocado, Rudoe will join the board as digital and technology director.

The move emphasises the importance of technology and digital sales channels to the retailer.

The 35-year-old joined Sainsbury’s in the summer of 2011 as director of online.

In March of last year, he took on the additional responsibility of leading Sainsbury’s digital strategy.

This responsibility includes click-and-collect, digital entertainments, mobile Scan and Go and building the digital experience team.

Rudoe will also take on the role of IT head, as current director Rob Fraser will depart from the position this month.

Describing Rudoe as a “driven and talented Sainsbury’s leader”, chief executive Justin King said his first-class team has turned the supermarket’s groceries online operation into a billion-pound business.

“Jon will be a fantastic support…as we continue on our journey to help customers Live Well For Less through our digital as well as traditional channels,” he added.

“Technology is a key part of our future vision...and I want to put it at the heart of everything we do to serve our customers,” said Rudoe.
