Food Lion, owned by Delhaize America, has implemented a sustainable seafood policy, providing customers with access to responsibly harvested seafood.
The roll out covers around 1,000 frozen, canned or packaged products sold across the store.
Food Lion merchandising senior vice president Karen Fernald said, "Through our policy, customers can trust that the seafood products they buy in our stores today are responsibly harvested.
"Our seafood products have been documented as meeting important criteria around sustainability, adding Food Lion to an elite list of grocers in the U.S. to accomplish this goal."
The company's seafood sustainability policy requires its suppliers to provide full traceability back to source seafood farm for the products sold.
It also sees that wild-caught seafood will be sourced from fisheries that are governed by science-based management plans, farm-raised seafood is certified and reviewed and harvest levels are maintained within appropriate limits.
The Gulf of Maine Research Institute will be responsible to verify that fisheries supplying Food Lion are responsibly managed.
