Wine consumption in India to increase 73% by 2017

As per the survey, spirits consumption will also increase by 20% to 373.5 million cases over the reporting period.

Commenting on the survey, Vinexpo board chairman Xavier De Eizaguirre was quoted by PTI as saying, "Many factors are behind it as there is rise in the salary in the country, people are traveling to the West, local production is increasing and people are becoming sophisticated. For similar reasons, wine consumption in China has increased. It triggers demand in any country."

Indian spirit consumption rose sharply by 73.7% between 2008 and 2012, driven by 155.47% climb in consumption of brandy and 109.75% of Scotch whiskey.

Of the total 1.10 million cases of wine consumed in 2013, around 0.67 million cases were red wine, while white wine and rose wine were 0.37 million cases and 0.06 million cases respectively.

Indians will consume 1.15 million cases of red wine, 0.63 million cases of white wine and 0.10 million cases of rose wine by 2017, the Vinexpo suvey revealed.

Vinexpo stated that India must also become the fourth largest spirits importer in Asia by 2017, overtaking Thailand.
