Plant & Food Research has opened its new Maitai Seafood Research facility to accommodate its portfolio of seafood technologies.
The investment is a part of the company's efforts to support research to understand the sensory, behavioral and physiological characteristics of seafood species, and benefit the domestic seafood industry.
It will support the ongoing Precision Seafood Harvesting Primary Growth Partnership programme and the MBIE-funded Wildfish 2030 programme.
The center will allow the company to gather various species at various life stages, and increase the quality and quantity of finfish for research into physiology, behavior and husbandry.
Plant & Food Research CEO Peter Landon-Lane said, "Seafood is a core sector for Plant & Food Research and a growth area for the company's scientific and business activities.
"The success we're celebrating today is a reflection of the hard work of those involved in Seafood R&D over many years, especially of the work carried out within the recently created Seafood Technologies Portfolio."
Plant & Food Research is a New Zealand-based science company that offers R&D services to add value to fruit, vegetable, crop and food products.
