Independent DNA analysis of products bearing the sustainability label from Friend of the Sea has confirmed the species tested match their respective labels.
The analysis, conducted in March 2014 on samples of some products bearing the sustainability certification label, comes from FEM2-Ambiente, spin-off at Bicocca University of Milan.
"Friend of the Sea exclusive DNA testing program is further assurance for consumers and an important service provided to fisheries, farmers, processing and distributing companies to monitors supplies' origin and sustainability in an undisputable way," said Paolo Bray, director of Friend of the Sea.
The organization said the DNA testing serves as "an additional check" on the sustainability verification process. The organization anticipates testing all Friend of the Sea-labeled products over the next few months.
