sh Salmon Co. (SSC) announced it will create 40 jobs in Stornoway and the Isle of Lewis, brining its Hebrides workforce to more than 200, on rising demand in Europe, United States and the Far East.The company said it has seen overseas exports increase in the first three months of 2014 with more than 40 percent of its sales going to high-end retailers and restaurants in France and the U.S. and also the emerging markets of Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan and China.SSC employs more than 400 staff at 60 separate sites across the Highlands and Islands and West Coast.
In the past three years, the company has invested GBP 9 million (USD 15.1 million, EUR 10.9 million) in the Western Isles, spending GBP 3.5 million (USD 5.9 million, EUR 4.3 million) with local suppliers.
“I am delighted that these 40 new jobs have been created as the company continues its drive to capture a foothold in lucrative international markets. It is good news for the Western Isles economy,” said Joe Fitzpatrick, minister of parliamentary business.
“The Scottish Government is supporting investment to strengthen the islands traditional industries and to grow new industries of the future. We will also support ambitious Scottish companies as they access new markets.”
