On May 27th, 2014, in Manitoba Provincial Court, F. Baigle Candy Co. Ltd. of Winnipeg, Manitoba, entered guilty pleas to two counts under subsection 5 and subsection 24. of the Food and Drugs Act. The company was ordered to pay a total fine of $2,500.
On August 31, 2012, a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) investigation determined that F. Baigle Candy Co. Ltd. manufactured and sold two products that did not meet the prescribed standards for allergen declarations on the product labels. The candy products contained undeclared dried albumen. Between September 24th and November 29th, 2012, F. Baigle Candy Co. Ltd. obstructed, hindered or knowingly made false or misleading statements to inspectors—namely that the products containing the dried albumen had not been produced or sold since January 2010 when, in fact, they had been produced and sold in 2012.
