While rain has begun to subside in much of the Midwest, Iowa, the top corn and soybean producer, reported 2.6 days suitable for fieldwork because of rain. That state’s corn slipped three points to 76% good to excellent and soybeans slipped 2 point s to 73%.
Chicago corn and soybean futures have been trending lower as the majority of both crops are doing well and forecasts through mid-July indicate favorable temperatures for corn pollination.
USDA weekly crop progress data showed corn silking advanced to 15%, down from the 18% average. However, in key states Iowa was at 4%, Illinois at 28%, and Nebraska 8%. All of those were behind the averages.
For soybeans, blooming was 24% done, which was ahead of the 21% average. In Iowa, 21% was blooming versus the 26% average and Illinois was at 29% versus the 17% average.
Winter wheat harvest at 57%
Winter wheat harvest advanced to 57% from the previous week’s 43% but trailed the 60% average. Harvest was 70% done in Kansas, the largest wheat state, versus the 88% average. Texas was at 85% , versus the 90% average, and Oklahoma was at 95%, versus the 96% average.
The soft red winter harvest advanced with Illinois at 82% versus the 79% average, Indiana at 52% versus 64%, and Arkansas at 96% versus 100%.
Winter wheat ratings were nearly the same as the previous week at 5% excellent, 26% good, 25% fair, 22% poor and 22% very poor. The good picked up a point from the fair rating.
Soft red winter wheat was better with Arkansas wheat unchanged at 66% good to excellent, Illinois remained at 56%, and Indiana stayed at 65%
Spring wheat was 47% headed to match the average. North Dakota, the top producer, was 35% headed versus the 40% average. The overall crop was rated 70% good to excellent, with the excellent up 1 to 12% and good down 1 to 58%. North Dakota’s crop was unchanged at 83% good to excellent.
Cotton squaring at 53%, rated 55% good to excellent
Cotton squaring was at 53% and bolls were set on 12%, versus the 60% and 16% averages. The crop was rated 55% good to excellent, up 2% from a week ago.
Oats were 80% headed, compared with the 83% average, and were unchanged at 64% good to excellent. Sorghum coloring was at 15% and heading at 23% versus the 20% and 26% averages. It was 61% good to excellent. Rice was 17 headed, versus the 14% average and was 70% good to excellent.
