Mettler-Toledomettler Safeline Metal Detection has expanded its comprehensive range of product inspection technologies with the addition of the L Series Pipeline metal detectors. These are designed to identify and remove metal contaminants from food products in liquid, paste and slurry formats such as soups, pastas, baby foods, condiments, sauces and liquid chocolate before packaging.

With its sophisticated detection head, enhanced filtering techniques and use of high frequency technology, these compact metal detection systems enable food manufacturers to increase their productivity, reduce operational costs and comply with international food safety standards, irrespective of harsh food processing conditions.

The L Series Pipeline metal detectors use advanced detection coil technology and digital signal processing to deliver highly accurate and sensitive detection for all types of metals such as non-magnetic stainless steel, and non-spherical objects like wire, swarf and slithers of metal which are notoriously hard to detect. Mettler-Toledo’s Zero Metal Free Zone (ZMFZ) technology ensures that metal fittings on the throughput pipe and other process equipment can be positioned as close as possible to the detection head without affecting the detection process, helping to reduce the length of product flow pipelines. This protects product quality by shortening the distance travelled during the inspection process, while reinforcing the accuracy of the detection. The system’s high levels of in-process stability provide a reliable, on-line performance and minimise product waste due to the elimination of false triggering and the loss of good product.

The L Series Pipeline detectors are designed with customer requirements and constraints in mind. The system is compact to save space on the factory floor. It is constructed in stainless steel that can be sealed up to Ingress Protection Rating (IP66) level to withstand heavy wash-down regimes, enabling it to be used in the harshest of food production environments. A wide range of pipes and fittings as well as a selection of reject valves can be tailored to the product being inspected.

Its built-in touch screen control panel enables operators to monitor the inspection process and trouble-shoot efficiently. The panel can be linked to a wide range of data management systems, and also installed remotely from the search head to enable the point of inspection to be located in traditionally hard to reach places. The system is also supplied with a Mettler-Toledo IPac installation and performance verification package, providing easily access to relevant documentation to support compliance with industry standards and information to prove that due diligence has been fully exercised.

“The L Series Pipeline detectors enable food producers to detect hard to find contaminants before their liquid, slurry or paste products are packaged, preventing whole batches of products to be rejected and money to be lost unnecessarily.” said Jonathan Richards, Head of Marketing of Mettler-Toledo Safeline Metal Detection. “This reduction in costs, combined with enhanced security for end-consumers, can provide manufacturers with a strong competitive advantage, enhance brand protection and also protect their bottom-line”.
