Slovakia has started to check food more strictly at the country´s borders.
The Slovak Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry has imposed this measure in the wake of the announcement of a Russian embargo on agricultural products from the countries that support sanctions against Moscow, ministry spokesperson Radka Kulaviakova said on Thursday.
"We're not in a position at the moment to predict the scope and length of potential sanctions by Russia on the European Union (EU)," added the spokesperson. "We've made checks at the borders stricter with immediate effect so that [imported] food complies with all due norms in place in Slovakia."
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said earlier on Thursday that Russia is imposing a ban on food imports from the EU and the United States in retaliation for their sanctions against Moscow over the Ukraine crisis.
