Core Tip: Miami Beach commissioners have approved a ban on the sale of alcohol at late night sidewalk cafes from 2am to 8am.

Miami Beach commissioners have approved a ban on the sale of alcohol at late night sidewalk cafes from 2am to 8am.

The new law will come into effect from 30 May.

The measure is part of a three-month program task force that the city has set up to make changes to Ocean Drive.

Approved during a public hearing, it is aimed at creating safer environment and reduce crime for families and clean-up Ocean Drive.

Mayor Philip Levine was quoted by Local10.com as saying "It's turning into a terrible place that's become a cancer -- the cancer spreads throughout our entire city. Whenever you bring up Ocean Drive anywhere, people are very negative. No residents go there. Locals aren't going there. It's a dangerous place."

This is a toned down version of the earlier ordinance proposed by Levine which asked for ban on alcohol sales at 2am in all outdoor areas, including sidewalk cafés and outside bars.

Now, the law will only apply to sidewalk cafés. However, customers will be allowed to drink inside restaurants.

There are 196 sidewalk cafes at Miami Beach.
