Core Tip: Breakside Brewery has released new limited edition beers in bottles “Back to the Future IPA” for Portland Beer Week and “Oui, Chef” the latest in the Farmhouse, Fruit & Funk Series.
In addition to the 2 highly anticipated bottle releases are two new draft-only IPA's in the form of "Old World IPA" (available now) and "Session Double IPA" (released later this week). Back to the Future IPA (a collaboration with Seattle's Fremont Brewing Co.) will be available primarily during Portland Beer Week at participating locations on draft and in 22oz bottles.

Oui, Chef is available right now on draft and will be available everywhere in bottles in June. The new Session Double IPA is a test-run on a new IPA the brewers are particularly excited about that may become a new year-round IPA exclusively for Breakside's upcoming 12oz bottles and 6-packs, we look forward to hearing your feedback!

Back to the Future IPA- a collaboration with our friends at Fremont Brewing Co. for Portland Beer Week

This IPA is a cross-border collaboration with Seattle's Fremont Brewing. We planned the beer together and each brewed a batch of it for our cities' respective Beer Weeks. When we set out to do this beer together, we knew that we wanted to make a big IPA and showcase some fun hop varietals that don't get much attention yet.

We specifically chose new varietals that we think have a lot of promise, and it's named after the futuristic hops used in each version: Jarrylo and Equinox in Fremont's, and Azacca and Ella in ours. These beers very might well introduce you to new hop varietals that will be front and center in many IPAs to come.

Oui, Chef is a straw-colored farmhouse ale brewed with European spelt and two types of fennel. We use both fennel seed and fennel pollen at different points in the brewing process to layer in the complex savory and herbal notes from the spice. Originally brewed as part of our Chef Collaboration series in 2012, this beer was designed by our brewers and Chef Gabriel Rucker of Le Pigeon Restaurant in Portland.

This is the third release in our new Farmhouse, Fruit and Funk Series. This set of six beers-each available for two months of the year-showcases the deft and playful ways in which our brewers use non-traditional ingredients to make complex, flavorful beers. From lychee and yellow chilies to Oregon-grown peaches and California kumquats, this line of beers stakes a claim for the "culinary beer" as an emergent, delicious and elegant new beer style.

This draft only release is a beer that evolved from our award-winning English Pale Ale, which re-tooled to give it a bolder hop presence and higher alcohol. In other words, we wanted to put our pale ale on steroids and turned it into an IPA. Thus, Old World IPA was born. While the aggressive use of hops is very American, this beer's roots are quintessentially European. We've sourced world-class English malt to give the beer a beguiling softness; Slovenian hops used throughout the brewing process give the beer its distinctive floral, herbal, woody and spicy notes.

We hope that this beer shows you a whole new realm of IPAs-a style that was born of the Old World and perfected in the Northwest. Available on draft only during May 2015.

Our brewers love hops. They love them so much that they are always tracking down new varietals, coming up with new combinations, and seeking to extract the most flavor and aroma they can from the beautiful hops we have in the Northwest. Often times, the beers they make with these new hops and schedules are done in small batches at our pub, where they are served on draft to our regulars. Every once in a while, the brewers get so excited about a new hoppy beer that they decide to immediately scale it up to share it with a wider audience. Session Double IPA is one of those beers.

This IPA uses Mosaic, Cascade and Columbus hops to make for one of the most expressive, dank and tropical beers we've ever made. Strong resinous notes are coupled with hints of citrus and big juicy flavors of mango and tangerine. The bitterness is balanced against a simple malt bill to allow for these hops to really shine.
