Core Tip: Official data showed that China’s exports decline has narrowed in May, while imports were unexpectedly weak, adding to concerns about the country’s trade prospects, Xinhua reported.
Exports slipped 2.8 percent to USD191.16 billion last month, recovering from a 6.2-percent drop in April and a 14.6-percent slump in March, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) said.

Meanwhile, official data showed imports slumped 18.1 percent compared to a year ago to USD130.96 billion, dragging total foreign trade volume down by a 9.7-percent drop.

“Looking forward, we expect continued gradual recovery in export demand going into the second half as the economic growth outlook perks up for the G3 in the second quarter,” an analyst with CICC said.

According to data by the National Bureau of Statistics, China’s consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, declined 1.2 percent year on year in May, Xinhua reported.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices in May slipped 0.2 percent, unchanged from the 0.2-percent drop recorded in April.

Falling prices of vegetables, fruits and eggs due to seasonal factors were the main cause of the CPI decline last month, NBS statistician Yu Qiumei said.
