Temperatures above 30 degrees caused a peak in the cucumber market last week. "The revival came from consumption," says Peter Fes of Best of Four. "Everyone was shouting for cucumbers. Due to the warm weather and the cultivation switch there were also less on the market. They ran out quickly." The day prices shot up to 90 cents - quite a difference from the week mediation. "They were significantly lower. For many the peak was a surprise."

Despite the peak, Fes doesn't believe the cucumber year has been that great. "If you were in production last week, you made your money, but there were also a significant amount of growers who were switching. In general it hasn't been a year to celebrate," says Fes. "Some growers were able to make good prices in the spring, but the market was also hanging around 5 to 6 cents for weeks."

The prices have now stabilised. The prices of the 40's have dropped to a level between 30 and 35 cents. The 35's are going for 20-25 cents at the moment.
