During Canada’s 2014 apple season, a national online study asked Canadians to share their knowledge and experience of 16 different apple varieties. A total of 216 surveys were completed across Canada. The results showed that Canadians who have tasted the SweeTango apple, love it. They rate it as their number one apple and describe it as ‘crispy’ and ‘juicy’.

In general, the survey showed that Canadians love apples. 99 percent of respondents report eating apples and 80 percent eats them daily or several times a week. Almost three quarters of the respondents eat apples fresh as a snack, just as they are. However, cooking, baking, preserving and eating them as part of a meal, are popular ways to enjoy apples as well.

Out of all respondents, 94 percent indicated that a ‘crisp bite’ is the most important attribute when selecting an apple, followed by ‘very juicy’ (79 percent) and ‘sweet taste’ (67 percent). Sweet apples are preferred over sweet-tart and tart apples.

Grown in Nova Scotia and Quebec

The Canadian SweeTango is grown in Nova Scotia and Quebec. The season doesn’t start until late September and runs through December. SweeTango is a natural cross between the Honeycrisp and Zestar! varieties. This crisp apple has a sweet taste, with a lively touch of citrus, honey and spice. SweeTango is also grown in the US. The variety is managed by Next Big Thing, a 45-member cooperative of family growers that is headquartered in Minnesota.

SweeTango apples will be actively promoted by Scotian Gold for the 2015 Canadian campaign. Promotion includes television, online video advertising, collaborations with Canadian food bloggers and attendance at high profile consumer events. See www.SweeTango.com for more information on this apple variety.
