Figs grown in Gaziantep’s Araban district have taken their place on the market stalls; named after the region they are grown in, the Araban fig is known for its completely natural cultivation and distinctive taste.
Grown without the use of pesticides on the Araban plains, the figs are cultivated in a completely natural environment, and being that this year’s harvest is expected to be abundant, growers are very pleased.
The figs are collected from the orchards in the early morning while the weather is cool. They are then sold by the growers or suppliers at markets, well populated places or on roadside stalls.
The fig is famous among consumers for its honey like sweetness which cannot be found in figs grown in other places, and due to good rainfall this year, high yields are expected.
For the first few days of the harvest the price has been higher than last year’s, according to a grower, who is selling his figs himself, “The prices started at €2.60 a kilo, in the first few days. As growers we’re pleased with this price. Compared to last year we have better yields this year.”
The fig is very popular with consumers and the price is expected to decline within 1-2 weeks.
