The area for growing in winter greenhouses grew by 124.6 hectares (6.6%), reaching 2012 hectares. 69% of the total area of all agricultural greenhouses companies is accounted for by winter greenhouses.

The study conducted by the Belgorod (oblast in western Russia), based investment company presents an analysis of the production of greenhouse vegetables by federal districts of the Russian Federation. It looks at the dynamics of production, changes in the area of greenhouses, yield, wholesale and retail prices. Much attention is paid to the implementation of investment projects, government support measures, as well as profiles of the largest greenhouses in the country.

In terms of greenhouse vegetable harvest, 94,900 tons of vegetables were collected from winter greenhouses in 2014, which is 12.7 % more than in 2013. The average yield of vegetables was 29.6 kg/m2 which is 5.7% higher than in 2013.

In 2014, the total consumption of greenhouse tomatoes amounted to 1,121,000 tons. The market share of imported tomato produce was 74%, own production of tomatoes on covered ground (by agricultural organizations) was 18% and on open soil (by agricultural organizations) - 8 %.

The analysis showed that almost 60% of all industrial greenhouses are located in the Central and Volga Federal Districts. The Southern and North Caucasian Federal Districts accounted for 11% of winter greenhouses. The leader in the production of greenhouse vegetables in winter greenhouses is the Volga Federal District. The district accounts for a third of the gross harvest of greenhouse vegetables in the country. Second place goes to the Central Federal District, where 22% of vegetables are grown in winter greenhouses.

In the city of Moscow and the Moscow region, the development of enterprises contributes to the concentration of the most substantial market sales.

In the Belgorod region, within the framework of the Russian Federation’s strategic course on import substitution, the ambitious “500 ha Greenhouse Cluster,” project is being actively implemented and overseen by the JSC Corporation Razvitie. According to the project plan, 500 hectares of greenhouse complex will be constructed in the region by the year 2020. The planned total production volume of the region’s greenhouses is expected to reach 250,000 tons, which will occupy an area of no less than 10% of the federal market of greenhouse vegetables. In 2014, the region produced more than 16,000 tons of vegetable and salad products. At the beginning of 2015 JSC Corporation Razvities possessed 56.3 hectares of existing greenhouses. The corporation is engaged in attracting investments to the region, the development of the priority areas of the regional economy, and the support of investment projects in supervised areas.
