New York’s Staten Island assemblyman Matthew Titone has proposed a package of bills, which propose a ban on sales of sugary drinks larger than 16oz to minors across the state.
Titone has suggested that foods and drinks should have warning labels, which must show the percentage of a person's recommended daily intake of sugar, reported CBS New York.
Titone was quoted by the new publication as saying: "We allow children to see G-rated movies on their own, but they can't see R-rated movies on their own. It's the same concept.
"You know, if a parent or guardian - if they really want their children to have that obscene amount of sugar - they can purchase it for them."
The new law, if passed, mandates the individuals to show ID to purchase sugar and similar will be applied to buy cigarettes and cans of spray paint.
The American Heart Association recommends per day intake of sugar levels between 25g and 45g.
A 16oz. bottle of Coca-Cola includes 52g of sugar, while a 20oz. bottle of Vitamin Water comprises 32g of sugar, said the news publication.
