Qatar and Bulgaria are planning to set up a joint-venture involving leading food producers from both countries.
According to the Bulgarian Government press service, around 20 of the best Bulgarian firms involved in meat, fruit, and vegetables production are expected to join the new joint-stock food company, Focus Information Agency reported.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and Qatar Environment Minister Ahmed bin Amir al-Humaidi met recently to agree on the establishment of a new commission as part of the development.
The commission, which will include government representatives from Bulgaria and Qatar, is aimed at strengthening the joint initiative.
During the meeting, Borisov assured the quality and safety of Bulgarian foods, which he said will meet all European standards, the news agency reported.
The Board of the Qatari Chamber of Commerce member Ahmed Bin Mohammed Al Obaidly was quoted as saying: "A great interest is expressed in Bulgarian production in the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf."
Further details of the project are expected to be discussed in a meeting of the Qatari delegation, led by Al-Humaidi, with Bulgarian officials.
Bulgarian officials have been trying for years to find a way for local meat producers to get into the Qatari market, novinite.com reported.
Humaidi said that the country's strict food safety requirements were a reason for not proceeding with proposed projects earlier.
