Spain: Almeria is the leading vegetable exporter

Almeria has remained Spain's leading vegetable exporter in the first six months of 2015, while Valencia has topped the ranking when it comes to fruit, according to data processed by Hortoinfo provided by the statistical service Estacom (Icex-Tax Agency), with codes from the Tariff Integrated from the European Communities (TARIC).

Vegetables

Between 1 January and 30 June, Almeria exported 1,207.13 million kilos of vegetables, Murcia 855.47 and Valencia 274.17 million kilos.

Fourth in the ranking is Alicante, with 139.35 million kilos, followed by Navarra (137.76), Barcelona (99.5), Granada (95.1), Cadiz (89.9), Seville (60.17) and Las Palmas (50.62).

Fruit

In the case of fruit, Valencia has been the leading exporter with 1,126.44 million kilos, followed by Murcia and Castellon, with 659.72 and 577.93 million kilos, respectively.

Huelva ranks fourth with 326.89 million kilos of fruit exported, followed by Almeria (258.71), Alicante (196.17), Seville (151.81), Barcelona (129.06), Lleida (115.42) and Madrid (106.31).

Products and destinations

We analyse the data for the three provinces that have exported the greatest volumes, both for vegetables and fruit.

Almeria

Tomatoes are Almeria's most exported product, with 369.89 million kilos shipped overseas, followed by peppers (273.68), cucumbers (204.41), watermelons (152.56), courgettes (129.04), lettuce (90.41), aubergines (62.54), melons (54.86), and oranges and clementines, with 26.86 million kilos.

As for destination countries, Germany ranked first with 433.67 million kilos, followed by France (225.32), the Netherlands (172.34), United Kingdom (165.43), Italy (112.09), Poland (78.67), Sweden (39.6), Portugal (38.01), Belgium (27.2), Denmark (26.27), Czech Republic (26.16), Austria (19.39), Romania (15.41), Lithuania (14.72), Finland (12.4), Switzerland (9.77), Ireland (8.2), Latvia (7.63), Slovakia (5.35) and Hungary, with 4.41 million kilos; the remaining 23.22 million kilos have been distributed between several other countries.

Murcia

Lettuce has been Murcia's most exported product, with 322.67 million kilos, followed by lemons, with 259.01 million kilos, broccoli and cauliflower (185,84), oranges and clementines (108.79), peaches and nectarines (89.12), tomatoes (65.18), melons (61.2), celery (47.24), peppers (44.08), watermelon (36.99), cabbages and other brassicas (30.68), and apricots (23.04).

The main destination for Murcia's fruit and vegetable exports has also been Germany, with 363.16 million kilos, followed by the UK (302.09), France (233.88), the Netherlands (125.56), Italy (119.85), Poland (73.25), Sweden (42.88), Belgium (36.41), Denmark (31.5), Austria (26.63), Czech Republic (24.31), Switzerland (17.09), Finland (15.9), Portugal (14.09), Lithuania (13.12), Ireland (11.59), Latvia (7.11), Hungary (6.57), Slovakia (5.9) and Romania (5.35).

Valencia

Oranges, clementines, mandarins and tangerines top the ranking of the province's horticultural exports, with 870.73 million kilos. They are followed by onions, with 80.71 million kilos, lemons (46.23), peaches and nectarines (42.63), tomatoes (33.93), watermelons (29.32), strawberries (23.84), cucumbers (22.83), peppers (20.67), broccoli and cauliflower (15.85), kaki (15.78), lettuce (14.02) and melons (10.68).

The most important destination for Valencia's fruit and vegetables is Germany, where 343.39 million kilos were exported, followed by France with 315.96 million kilos, the UK (114.98), Italy (97.91), Poland (95.6), the Netherlands (65.97), Czech Republic (57.36), Belgium (54.38), Switzerland (30.49), Hungary (22.02), Sweden (19.98), Slovakia (17.64), Lithuania (15.51), Austria (15.09), Brazil (14.83), Croatia (13.55), Algeria (9.61), Denmark (9.11), UAE (8.68) and Ireland (8.29).
