TV channel "Moscow-24" reported this week that the price of produce on the shelves in the capital have fallen dramatically. This is due to the high productivity of farmers in Russia.
One vegetable seller, commented: "Today, a kilo of cabbage costs on average €0.54. A month ago, its value was not less than €0.68-0.82. In general, over the last month almost all vegetables, except tomatoes, have fallen in price. Cabbage, potatoes and onions became cheaper by €0.27, and cucumbers about €0.14.”
The TV channel's journalist reported that at the National Union of Vegetable Producers the drop in prices for agricultural products was attributed to the fact that this year's harvest was high.
"Russian farmers have no place to store large amounts of produce, so therefore sell them cheaply," - it was explained during the program. And the president of the National Union of Vegetables Producers, Sergei Korolev said that Muscovites, who annually consume up to three million tons of fruit and vegetables, are happy to buy domestic products.
“Usually after March we have no domestic product left. And we have to import. We import a lot. And today, the program that has been adopted by the state to compensate for the cost of the vegetable stores, should solve the problem," - he says.
Sergei Korolev, emphasizes that as long as farmers do not have enough vegetable stores, there will be insufficient domestic winter vegetables on the shelves. Therefore, prices will rise.
He points out: “Prices rise every year. In summer to autumn they fall, towards winter they increase. Towards spring they increase further and then they fall again in summer, as soon as the local produce appears. Therefore, most likely, this trend will continue. As to how much the prices will rise, it is difficult to say. We believe that they should not increase more than last year."
As is written on Moscow 24’s internet site, “If we follow the forecast of experts, in 4 months time the price of tomatoes will jump to an average of €2.18 per kilogram, cucumbers will cost about the same. Carrots will cost about €0.54, onion - €0.41, the retail price tag of cabbage will be €0.52 per kilogram, potatoes - €0.41."
