The harvest of organic pears has turned out very low this year. This will likely lead to increased imports.
At the end of September, just 389 tons of organic pears were stored. This is around half as much AS a year ago, and clearly lower than in the previous years as well. "The profit situation of Swiss organic pears was weak this year," says Stephan Jaun, communications manager of Bio Suisse. "On one hand, it can be lead back to the alternation, which in particular is strongly pronounced in organic fruit. On the other hand, the drought and heat of this summer has had an effect."
We have assumed that because of the low harvest quantity, the organic pears will be sold out earlier than last year. "Imports of organic pears will likely increase next year because of this," says Jaun. He emphasizes that organic pears are much sought after and that production could be expanded further.
