The Nicaraguan company Caipsa (producer of 10 percent of the country's bananas) has announced that one of its objectives is to introduce the product in Spain and share the market with Canary bananas. To this end, the company attended the fair Fruit Attraction, which was held last week in Madrid.
Speaking to Efeagro, the manager of the Pacific Industrial Corporation, SA (Caipsa), Enrique Gasteazoro, said that "Nicaraguan bananas should not be seen as competitors for Canary bananas, but as a good supplement, because they both have a similar quality and taste."
In this regard, he stated that some agreements have been signed with Spanish companies for 2016 and that, once established in Spain, they hope to enter also other European markets, especially in the Mediterranean basin.
Gasteazoro explained that, "Caipsa's production represents 10% of the national total, which translates to 2 million 20 kilo cases per year, 98% of which is currently exported to the U.S. (70%) and Europe (30%), mainly Germany and the Netherlands."
