Czech customers are paying more than last year for some vegetables as a result of the impact of this summer's drought, even though competition from cheap imports will not allow for excessive price rises. One of the crops affected by this situation is irrigated cabbage, with increased production costs that have been reflected in the price.
"The dry summer has taken a toll on everything, including prices and production volumes," stated Ivana Vašíčková, of the Valašské-based firm Ovocentrum. This includes also products like potatoes or prunes, but cabbages are amongst the most affected, with a price per kilo that currently ranges between 13 and 17 crowns*, while last year it didn't exceed 11 crowns.
